Preventive Maintenance

If you want your computer to live a long useful life Preventive Maintenance is very important.

HEAT is the number one destroyer of all types of electronics. Computers are no exception. Laptops - Notebooks are extremely vulnerable.

Desktop - Tower Computers:

Lint and dirt clogs heat sinks In Power Supply, and the system processor - CPU and adheres to the cooling fan blades. Once lint has started building up it becomes a filter trapping more and more lint and dirt. Once over heating begins it can cause the thermal conductive material located between the processor and its heat sink to deteriorate to the extent that the heat dissipation is weakened, and can cause system processor failure. Heat buildup is also destructive to system Memory and Hard Disk Drives.

Laptops - Notebooks:

Same As Desktops excluding the power supply.

There is no hard fast rule as to how often preventative maintenance should be preformed.

My Suggestions:

Laptops - Notebooks with heavy usage in an average environment every 6 to 8 months, Very little usage or extremely clean environment  every year to 18 months.

Desktops - Towers:  with heavy usage in an average environment every 6 to 8 months, Very little usage or extremely clean environment  every year to 18 months. A good indication on desktop - tower computers is the power supply fan blades - If they are collecting lint and dirt, You should have preventive maintenance done soon.

Preventive Maintenance Procedures

Desktops - Towers:

Remove and clean case fan - If Applicable.
Remove and disassemble the power supply and clean the heat sink remove and clean the fan. Reassemble the power supply.
Remove the system processor fan and heat sink, and clean both.
Remove old thermal conductive compound and replace with new. Reinstall the processor heat sink and fan.

Laptops - Notebooks:

Completely disassemble the Laptop - Notebook in order to access and remove the system board - motherboard.
Remove the system processor fan and heat sink and heat pipe, and clean both.
Remove old thermal conductive compound and replace with new. Reinstall the processor heat sink and fan.
